CONTEXT: Cannabis use among the general population has increased over time, in part due to decriminalization of use and greater social acceptance of cannabis use. These changes have contributed to increased availability of cannabis products, thus raising the likelihood that a subset of adolescent and young adult athletes will use cannabis. Therefore, it is imperative that clinicians and other providers working with young athletes have a thorough understanding of the impact cannabis can have on the athletic performance and overall health of a young athlete. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: PubMed (Medline), CINAHL, PsycINFO, and SportDiscus databases were used to perform a literature search of articles published between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2022. Additional articles were reviewed based on references obtained from initial articles. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical review. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. RESULTS: Survey studies suggest that up to 1 in 4 athletes have used cannabis at least once in the last year. Age, sex, race, sexual orientation, level of competition, and country of residence of an athlete all contribute to differing rates of cannabis use among athletes. The scientific literature does not support using cannabis for athletic performance, and multiple studies have demonstrated notable impairments in objective athletic performance measures. Cannabis use can also negatively impact an athlete's overall health via cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and mental health symptoms and disorders. CONCLUSION: Cannabis use among adolescent and young adult athletes is common, and rates of use are influenced by many different factors. Current evidence suggests that cannabis use can worsen sport performance, negatively impact an athlete's general health, and contribute to negative mental health outcomes.

Mounting evidence suggests metabolism instructs stem cell fate decisions. However, how fetal metabolism changes during development and how altered maternal metabolism shapes fetal metabolism remain unexplored. We present a descriptive atlas of in vivo fetal murine metabolism during mid-to-late gestation in normal and diabetic pregnancy. Using 13C-glucose and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), we profiled the metabolism of fetal brains, hearts, livers, and placentas harvested from pregnant dams between embryonic days (E)10.5 and 18.5. Our analysis revealed metabolic features specific to a hyperglycemic environment and signatures that may denote developmental transitions during euglycemic development. We observed sorbitol accumulation in fetal tissues and altered neurotransmitter levels in fetal brains isolated from hyperglycemic dams. Tracing 13C-glucose revealed disparate fetal nutrient sourcing depending on maternal glycemic states. Regardless of glycemic state, histidine-derived metabolites accumulated in late-stage fetal tissues. Our rich dataset presents a comprehensive overview of in vivo fetal tissue metabolism and alterations due to maternal hyperglycemia.

The flow of water through a horizontal small-scale Venturi tube of rectangular cross-section is simulated using a modified version of the open-source code DualSPHysics, which is based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) methods. Water is simulated using the Murnaghan-Tait equation of state so that weak compressibility is allowed. The hydrodynamics is coupled to a Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model. The convergence properties of SPH are improved by adopting a C[Formula: see text] Wendland function as the interpolation kernel, increased number of neighboring particles and non-reflective open boundary conditions at the outlet of the Venturi tube. The flow structure and differential pressure as well as the mainstream velocity profiles at different stations are compared with calibrated experimental data. A resolution independence test shows that good convergence to the experimental measurements is achieved using four million particles. At this resolution the simulations predict the experimental centerline velocity profile along the Venturi meter for a volumetric flow rate of ten liters per minutes (lpm) with a root-mean-square error of 4.3%. This error grows to 7.1% when the volumetric flow rate increases to 25 lpm. The predicted differential pressure matches the experimental data with errors varying from 1.4% (for 10 lpm) to 6.8% (for 25 lpm). Cross-sectional velocity profiles within the throat and divergent sections differ from the experimental measurements in less than 5.5%. In general, it is shown that the SPH model can provide an efficient and accurate method for recalibrating flow meters at moderately high Reynolds numbers instead of using costly experimental tests.

Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) differentiate into specialized cells, including midbrain dopaminergic neurons (DANs), and Non-human primates (NHPs) injected with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine develop some alterations observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Here, we obtained well-characterized DANs from hESCs and transplanted them into two parkinsonian monkeys to assess their behavioral and imaging changes. DANs from hESCs expressed dopaminergic markers, generated action potentials, and released dopamine (DA) in vitro. These neurons were transplanted bilaterally into the putamen of parkinsonian NHPs, and using magnetic resonance imaging techniques, we calculated the fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD), both employed for the first time for these purposes, to detect in vivo axonal and cellular density changes in the brain. Likewise, positron-emission tomography scans were performed to evaluate grafted DANs. Histological analyses identified grafted DANs, which were quantified stereologically. After grafting, animals showed signs of partially improved motor behavior in some of the HALLWAY motor tasks. Improvement in motor evaluations was inversely correlated with increases in bilateral FA. MD did not correlate with behavior but presented a negative correlation with FA. We also found higher 11C-DTBZ binding in positron-emission tomography scans associated with grafts. Higher DA levels measured by microdialysis after stimulation with a high-potassium solution or amphetamine were present in grafted animals after ten months, which has not been previously reported. Postmortem analysis of NHP brains showed that transplanted DANs survived in the putamen long-term, without developing tumors, in immunosuppressed animals. Although these results need to be confirmed with larger groups of NHPs, our molecular, behavioral, biochemical, and imaging findings support the integration and survival of human DANs in this pre-clinical PD model.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to examine the validity evidence for the 19-item form of the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation Inventory (College Student version) within health science schools in three different countries. The MUSIC Inventory includes five scales that assess the motivational climate by measuring students' perceptions related to five separate constructs: empowerment, usefulness, success, interest, and caring. BACKGROUND: The 26-item form of the MUSIC Inventory has been validated for use with undergraduate students and with students in professional schools, including students at a veterinary medicine school, a pharmacy school, and a medical school. A 19-item form of the MUSIC Inventory has also been validated for use with undergraduate students, but it has not yet been validated for use with medical school students. The purpose of this study was to provide validity evidence for the use of the 19-item form in heath science schools in three different countries to determine if this version is acceptable for use in different cultures. If validated, this shorter form of the MUSIC Inventory would provide more differentiation between the Interest and Usefulness scales and could reduce respondent fatigue. METHODOLOGY: Cook et al's [1] practical guidelines were followed to implement Kane's [2] validity framework as a means to examine the evidence of validity through scoring inferences, generalization inferences, and extrapolation inferences. Students (n = 667) in health science schools within three countries were surveyed. RESULTS: The results produced evidence to support all five hypotheses related to scoring, generalization, and extrapolation inferences. CONCLUSIONS: Scores from the 19-item form of the MUSIC Inventory are valid for use in health science courses within professional schools in different countries. Therefore, the MUSIC Inventory can be used in these schools to assess students' perceptions of the motivational climate.

BACKGROUND: This historical account reviews the life and lasting impact of Dr. Clarence Sumner Greene Sr. in neurosurgery. The article covers his early childhood, adulthood, and late-adulthood years to provide insights into his achievements and the lasting impact. METHODS: The writing of this project was sparked by the discovery of original scientific and bibliographical information about Greene Sr. The article thoroughly reviews Greene's upbringing, achievements, and the significance of his work on modern medicine. RESULTS: Clarence Sumner Greene, Sr. paved for African American physicians within neurosurgery and other medical specialties. While living through the segregation and progressive eras, Greene pursued his medical education at Howard University College of Medicine from 1932 to 1936 and graduated at the age of 34. He completed his general residency training at Howard and went on to become an assistant professor of surgery at Howard University School of Medicine in 1943. Five years later, Dr. Wilder G. Penfield offered Greene the chance to train under him in a 2-year neurosurgery residency program at the Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University from 1947 to 1949. Greene returned to Howard in 1949, eventually becoming the Chief of Neurosurgery and overhauling neurosurgical care by introducing advanced surgical and diagnostic procedures until his unfortunate death in 1957. CONCLUSIONS: Our article provides glimpses into the life of Dr. Greene Sr. and his marked impact on neurosurgery. His significant contributions to the field of medicine and ability to strive through racial barriers and social injustice provide guidance, support, and encouragement to aspiring physicians from all backgrounds.

Microstructural morphology of the extracellular matrix guides the organization of cells in 3D. However, current biomaterials-based matrices cannot provide distinct spatial cues through their microstructural morphology due to design constraints. To address this, colloidal gels are developed as 3D matrices with distinct microstructure by aggregating ionic polyurethane colloids via electrostatic screening. Due to the defined orientation of interconnected particles, positively charged colloids form extended strands resulting in a dense microstructure whereas negatively charged colloids form compact aggregates with localized large voids. Chondrogenesis of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and endothelial morphogenesis of human endothelial cells (ECs) are examined in these colloidal gels. MSCs show enhanced chondrogenic response in dense colloidal gel due to their spatial organization achieved by balancing the cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions compared to porous gels where cells are mainly clustered. ECs tend to form relatively elongated cellular networks in dense colloidal gel compared to porous gels. Additionally, the role of matrix stiffness and viscoelasticity in the morphogenesis of MSCs and ECs are analyzed with respect to microstructural morphology. Overall, these results demonstrate that colloidal gels can provide spatial cues through their microstructural morphology and in correlation with matrix mechanics for cell morphogenesis.

The development of novel biomaterials is a challenging process, complicated by a design space with high dimensionality. Requirements for performance in the complex biological environment lead to difficult a priori rational design choices and time-consuming empirical trial-and-error experimentation. Modern data science practices, especially artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), offer the promise to help accelerate the identification and testing of next-generation biomaterials. However, it can be a daunting task for biomaterial scientists unfamiliar with modern ML techniques to begin incorporating these useful tools into their development pipeline. This Perspective lays the foundation for a basic understanding of ML while providing a step-by-step guide to new users on how to begin implementing these techniques. A tutorial Python script has been developed walking users through the application of an ML pipeline using data from a real biomaterial design challenge based on group's research. This tutorial provides an opportunity for readers to see and experiment with ML and its syntax in Python. Stress is a condition that has been related to the development of risk behaviors for health such as sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption. The aim of this study was to examine the link between SSBs consumption and perceived stress level in university students. This was an observational, cross-sectional and single-time-point study where the subjects were recruited as a non-probabilistic sample of first-year university students. The students reported their SSBs consumption through a validated questionnaire, as well as their perceived stress level, evaluated through the Cohen scale. Comparisons were made between the means of all variables. Factorial analysis of variance was conducted to explore the effect of the variables' interaction on the stress level. One-way analysis of variance was performed to assess differences between the sexes. Men consumed more SSBs (6101.17 ± 3772.50 mL/week) compared to women (4294.06 ± 3093.8 mL/week). However, women had higher scores of perceived stress and showed a strong association of stress with the SSBs consumption pattern (r and p-value). This study shows for the first time the association that exists between stress and SSBs consumption and indicates that it is related to sex in the young population.

La reconstrucción mamaria utilizando el colgajo TRAM (transverse rectus abdominis muscle) bipediculado es un procedimiento poco frecuente aunque en ciertas ocasiones es de gran utilidad. Las indicaciones principales están descriptas para los casos que se requieren volúmenes de tejidos de mayor cantidad que la reconstrucción mamaria convencional, antecedentes de irradiación de grandes zonas de la pared del tórax y, en ciertas ocasiones, en reconstrucciones mamarias autólogas bilaterales. La presente publicación revisa el uso de 12 colgajos TRAM bipediculados en nuestra institución, las variantes que hemos usado y los resultados obtenidos. También se detallan elementos anatómicos de interés técnico con el objeto de reducir las complicaciones.


Breast reconstruction using the bipedicle TRAM (transverse rectus abdominis muscle) flap is a rare procedure, although it is sometimes very useful. The main indications are described for cases that require larger tissue volumes than conventional breast reconstruction, a history of irradiation of large areas of the chest wall, and on certain occasions, in bilateral autologous breast reconstructions. This publication reviews the use of 12 bipedicle TRAM flaps in our institution, the variants that we have used, and the results obtained. Anatomical elements of technical interest are also detailed to reduce complications.

Derivatives of 3,9-dimethoxypterocarpan (1, homopterocarpin) were prepared by nitration, amination, and oxidation reactions, among others, and their antifungal activity was evaluated against the phytopathogenic fungi Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and C. lindemuthianum. Derivatives were purified by chromatographic techniques and identified by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Eight derivatives were obtained from 1 corresponding to 3,9-dimethoxy-8-nitropterocarpan (2), 3,9-dimethoxy-2,8-dinitropterocarpan (3), 3,9-dimethoxy-2,8,10-trinitropterocarpan (4), 2,8-diamino-3,9-dimethoxypterocarpan (5), 3,9-dimethylcoumestan (6), medicarpin (7), 2'-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethylsulfanyl)-7,4'-dimethoxyisoflavan (8), and 4-(2-hydroxyethylsulfanyl)-7,2',4'-trimethoxyisoflavan (9). The in vitro antifungal activity of the derivatives was determined at concentrations between 35 and 704 µM. Compounds 7 and 8 at 704 µM, showed an inhibition of radial growth and spore germination close to 100%, exceeding that found for the starting compound 1, which was 46%. Growth inhibition assays were also performed for the derivative 8 on papaya fruits (Carica papaya L. cv. Hawaiana) and mango (Mangifera indica L. cv. Hilacha) infected with C. gloeosporioides. Compound 8 showed fungal growth inhibition in fruits higher than that found for 1 and thymol (a recognized natural antifungal), under the same conditions. In general, derivatives that exhibited greater antifungal activity correspond to the compounds containing hydroxyl groups in the structure. Some of the compounds obtained could be considered promising for the control of phytopathogenic fungi.

En este trabajo se presenta el listado actualizado de anfibios y reptiles de Ica. Las especies son comentadas, acompañadas de mapas de distribución y claves de identificación para reptiles y anfibios. Se recopiló información de registros en colecciones científicas, artículos científicos, informes de agencias gubernamentales de vida silvestre y bases de datos taxonómicas especializadas. Adicionalmente, entre los años 2019 y 2020 se realizaron evaluaciones de campo en zonas con vacíos de información. Se encontraron un total de 22 especies (anfibios 3 y reptiles 19). Los nuevos registros de reptiles para Ica incluyen la lagartija Liolaemus evaristoi y la serpiente Incaspis tachymenoides en la provincia de Chincha a 4200 y 3200 m de altitud respectivamente, la lagartija Stenocercus ornatissimus y la serpiente ciega Epictia tesselata en la provincia de Pisco a 3500 y 2800 m respectivamente. Los nuevos registros de anfibios incluyen a Pleurodema marmoratum en la provincia de Chincha (3900 m) y Telmatobius rimac en las provincias de Chincha y Palpa a 3900 y 2350 m respectivamente. La mayor riqueza y endemismos locales se encontraron en el desierto costero, mientras que, las ampliaciones de distribución y endemismos regionales se registraron en la vertiente occidental de los Andes. También, se observa que las familias Leptotyphlopidae y Viperidae, y los géneros Dicrodon, Stenocercus y Oxyrophus terminan su distribución en la vertiente occidental y la zona costera de los departamentos de Ica y Arequipa sin representantes en el extremo sur del Perú y Chile.


This paper presents the updated list of amphibians and reptiles of Ica. Species are commented, accompanied by distribution maps and identification keys for reptiles and amphibians. Information was collected from scientific collections, scientific articles, governmental wildlife agency reports, and specialized taxonomic database. Additionally, between 2019 and 2020, field surveys were carried out in areas with information gaps. A total of 22 species were found (amphibians 3 and reptiles 19). The new records of reptiles include the Liolaemus evaristoi lizard and the Incaspis tachymenoides snake from Chincha province at 4200 and 3200 m altitude respectively, the Stenocercus ornatissimus lizard and the blind snake Epictia tesselata from Pisco province at 3500 and 2800 m respectively. New amphibian records include Pleurodema marmoratum in Chincha province (3900 m) and Telmatobius rimac in Chincha and Palpa provinces at 3900 and 2350 m respectively. The greatest richness and local endemism were found in the coastal desert, while the expansion of distribution and regional endemism were recorded on the western slope of the Andes. Also, it is observed that the families Leptotyphlopidae and Viperidae, and the genera Dicrodon, Stenocercus and Oxyrophus are finishing their distribution in the western slope and the coastal zone of the departments of Ica and Arequipa without representatives in the extreme south of Peru and Chile.

It is hard to overestimate the influence of the endocannabinoid signaling (ECS) system on central nervous system (CNS) function. In the 40 years since cannabinoids were found to trigger specific cell signaling cascades, studies of the ECS system continue to cause amazement, surprise, and confusion! CB1 cannabinoid receptors are expressed widely in the CNS and regulate cell-cell communication via effects on the release of both neurotransmitters and gliotransmitters. CB2 cannabinoid receptors are difficult to detect in the CNS but seem to "punch above their weight" as compounds targeting these receptors have significant effects on inflammatory state and behavior. Positive and negative allosteric modulators for both receptors have been identified and examined in preclinical studies. Concentrations of the endocannabinoid ligands, N-arachidonoylethanolamine and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), are regulated by a combination of enzymatic synthesis and degradation and inhibitors of these processes are available and making their way into clinical trials. Importantly, ECS regulates many essential brain functions, including regulation of reward, anxiety, inflammation, motor control, and cellular development. While the field is on the cusp of preclinical discoveries providing impactful clinical and therapeutic insights into many CNS disorders, there is still much to be learned about this remarkable and versatile modulatory system.

Neural induction, both in vivo and in vitro, includes cellular and molecular changes that result in phenotypic specialization related to specific transcriptional patterns. These changes are achieved through the implementation of complex gene regulatory networks. Furthermore, these regulatory networks are influenced by epigenetic mechanisms that drive cell heterogeneity and cell-type specificity, in a controlled and complex manner. Epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation and histone residue modifications, are highly dynamic and stage-specific during neurogenesis. Genome-wide assessment of these modifications has allowed the identification of distinct non-coding regulatory regions involved in neural cell differentiation, maturation, and plasticity. Enhancers are short DNA regulatory regions that bind transcription factors (TFs) and interact with gene promoters to increase transcriptional activity. They are of special interest in neuroscience because they are enriched in neurons and underlie the cell-type-specificity and dynamic gene expression profiles. Classification of the full epigenomic landscape of neural subtypes is important to better understand gene regulation in brain health and during diseases. Advances in novel next-generation high-throughput sequencing technologies, genome editing, Genome-wide association studies (GWAS), stem cell differentiation, and brain organoids are allowing researchers to study brain development and neurodegenerative diseases with an unprecedented resolution. Herein, we describe important epigenetic mechanisms related to neurogenesis in mammals. We focus on the potential roles of neural enhancers in neurogenesis, cell-fate commitment, and neuronal plasticity. We review recent findings on epigenetic regulatory mechanisms involved in neurogenesis and discuss how sequence variations within enhancers may be associated with genetic risk for neurological and psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: The French PRODIGE 7 trial, published on January 2021, has raised doubts about the specific survival benefit provided by HIPEC with oxaliplatin 460 mg/m2 (30 minutes) for the treatment of peritoneal metastases from colorectal cancer. However, several methodological flaws have been identified in PRODIGE 7, specially the HIPEC protocol or the choice of overall survival as the main endpoint, so its results have not been assumed as definitive, emphasizing the need for further research on HIPEC. It seems that the HIPEC protocol with high-dose mytomicin-C (35 mg/m2) is the preferred regime to evaluate in future clinical studies. METHODS: GECOP-MMC is a prospective, open-label, randomized, multicenter phase IV clinical trial that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of HIPEC with high-dose mytomicin-C in preventing the development of peritoneal recurrence in patients with limited peritoneal metastasis from colon cancer (not rectal), after complete surgical cytoreduction. This study will be performed in 31 Spanish HIPEC centres, starting in March 2022. Additional international recruiting centres are under consideration. Two hundred sixteen patients with PCI ≤ 20, in which complete cytoreduction (CCS 0) has been obtained, will be randomized intraoperatively to arm 1 (with HIPEC) or arm 2 (without HIPEC). We will stratified randomization by surgical PCI (1-10; 11-15; 16-20). Patients in both arms will be treated with personalized systemic chemotherapy. Primary endpoint is peritoneal recurrence-free survival at 3 years. An ancillary study will evaluate the correlation between surgical and pathological PCI, comparing their respective prognostic values. DISCUSSION: HIPEC with high-dose mytomicin-C, in patients with limited (PCI ≤ 20) and completely resected (CCS 0) peritoneal metastases, is assumed to reduce the expected risk of peritoneal recurrence from 50 to 30% at 3 years. This paper describes the evaluation of the antimicrobial and hemolytic activity of the hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts from seeds and epicarps of Garcinia madruno; as well garcinol, morelloflavone and volkensiflavone isolated from the same species. In the preliminary test of bacterial susceptibility, hexane extracts from seeds and epicarps and the three compounds tested only displayed inhibitory growth effect against Gram-positive bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of extract and compounds ranging from 86.6 to 1253.4 µg/mL. The hemolytic activity was assessed; however, except for the methanol extract from seeds, none of the samples studied induced hemolysis. Thus, our results suggest that extracts and compounds from G. madruno have the potential to be used in the control of pathologies associated to Gram-positive bacteria. This is the first report of the antimicrobial and hemolytic activity of extracts of different polarity obtained from seeds and epicarps of this edible species.


El presente artículo describe la evaluación de la actividad antimicrobiana y hemolítica de los extractos de hexano, diclorometano, acetato de etilo y metanol, obtenidos de la semilla y el epicarpio de Garcinia madruno; así como de garcinol, morelloflavona y volkensiflavona; aislados de la misma especie. En el ensayo de susceptibilidad bacteriana, tanto el extracto de hexano obtenido a partir de la semilla y el epicarpio, y los tres compuestos aislados, únicamente mostraron actividad inhibitoria del crecimiento contra bacterias Gram-positivas. La concentración mínima inhibitoria presentó valores entre 86.6 y 1253.4 µg/mL. También se estableció la actividad hemolítica; sin embargo, con excepción del extracto metanólico obtenido a partir de las semillas, ninguna de las muestras evaluadas indujo hemólisis. Por lo tanto, los resultados sugieren que los extractos y compuestos de G. madruno tienen el potencial de ser usados en el control de bacterias Gram-positivas asociadas a diversas patologías. Este es el primer reporte de actividad antimicrobiana y hemolítica de extractos de diferente polaridad obtenidos de las semillas y epicarpios de esta especie comestible.

There is a need to better understand lipid metabolism during mosquito ovarian development. Lipids are the major source of energy supporting ovarian follicles development in mosquitoes. In this paper, we describe the complementary use of stable isotope labeling (SIL) and high-resolution mass spectrometry-based tools for the investigation of de novo triglycerides (TG) and diglycerides (DG) during the ovarian previtellogenic (PVG) stage (4-6 days posteclosion) of female adult Aedes aegypti. Liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution trapped ion mobility spectrometry-parallel accumulation sequential fragmentation-time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (LC-TIMS-PASEF-TOF MS/MS) allowed the separation and quantification of nonlabeled and 2H/13C-labeled TG and DG species. Three SIL strategies were evaluated (H2O/2H2O with 50:50 and 95:5 mixtures, 13C-sucrose, and 13C-glucose). Results showed wide applicability with no signs of lipid ovarian impairment by SIL induced toxicity. The analytical workflow based on LC-TIMS-TOF MS/MS provided high confidence and high reproducibility for lipid DG and TG identification and SIL incorporation based on their separation by retention time (RT), collision cross section (CCS), and accurate m/z. In addition, the SIL fatty acid chain incorporation was evaluated using PASEF MS/MS. The 2H/13C incorporation into the mosquito diet provided information on how TG lipids are consumed, stored, and recycled during the PVG stage of ovarian development.

RESUMEN Objetivos: Identificar la dependencia emocional en los estudiantes de medicina de universidad pública. Material y métodos : Estudio cuantitativo, no experimental, exploratorio, descriptivo, transversal. Se aplicó la escala de dependencia emocional de Ancima, Caballero, Cirilo y Aguirre (2013) integrada por 42 ítems. Las respuestas se establecen dicotómicamente Si o no. La población se conformó por 332 estudiantes de medicina de quinto año de una universidad pública. La escala fue aplicada a 303 estudiantes una muestra no probabilística, por conveniencia. Resultados: De 303 estudiantes, 183 (60,39%) eran del género femenino y 120 (39,60%) masculino, con promedio de edad de 24 años, con una desviación estándar de 1,46. Solo el 2,98% fueron "estables" y el 90,39% con "tendencia a la dependencia". Conclusiones: Los estudiantes de medicina presentan una marcada tendencia a la dependencia emocional. Siendo las mujeres las más dependientes.


SUMMARY Objective: To determine the emotional dependence of students of medicine in a public university. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried-out applying the 42-item scale of emotional dependence of Ancima, Caballero, Cirilo y Aguirre (2013) with dichotomous responses (yes/no); 332 five-year medical students were selected; a nonprobabilistic sample of 303 students was finally recruited. Results: 183 (60.39%) were females: mean age was 24 years; only 2.98% were stables and 90.39% had a tendency for dependence. Conclusions: Five-year medical students had a marked tendency for dependence, especially female students.

Durante los últimos años, la cirugía endoscópica transesfenoidal se ha convertido en el procedimiento quirúrgico de elección para el tratamiento de tumores hipofisarios. La técnica de abordaje actual es el resultado de una evolución histórica de vía por craneotomía a vía endonasal con ingreso a través del seno esfenoidal. Aunque la cirugía de tumores hipofisarios vía transesfenoidal endoscópica ha permitido disminuir las complicaciones graves asociadas a los abordajes externos, no está exenta de complicaciones, como la fístula de líquido cefalorraquídeo. A nivel del abordaje nasal, hay escasas descripciones de complicaciones y el compromiso del cartílago septal con deformidad en silla de montar no es una complicación documentada. Se presenta un caso de rinodeformidad en silla de montar poscirugía transesfenoidal de hipófisis en una paciente de 32 años a quien se le practicó una reconstrucción nasal con cartílago costal autólogo. En nuestra búsqueda bibliográfica es el primer caso registrado en Iberolatinoamérica


In recent years, transsphenoidal endoscopic surgery has become the surgical procedure of choice for the treatment of pituitary tumors. The current approach technique is the result of an historical evolution from craniotomy surgery to an endonasal procedure with entry through the sphenoid sinus. Although endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery has made it possible to reduce serious complications associated with external approaches, it is not without complications, such as cerebrospinal fluid fistula. At the level of the nasal approach, there are few descriptions of complications and involvement of the septal cartilage with saddle deformity is not a documented complication. We present a case of saddle rhinodeformity after transsphenoidal pituitary surgery in a 32-year-old patient who underwent nasal reconstruction with autologous costal cartilage. In our bibliographic search, it is the first case registered in IberoLatin America.

Diapause is one of the major strategies for insects to prepare for and survive harsh seasons. In females, the absence of juvenile hormone (JH) is a hallmark of adult reproductive diapause, a developmental arrest, which is much less characterized in males. Here we show that juvenile hormone III skipped bisepoxide (JHSB3) titers in hemolymph remarkably differ between reproductive males and females of the linden bug Pyrrhocoris apterus, whereas no JH was detected in diapausing adults of both sexes. Like in females, ectopic application of JH mimic effectively terminated male diapause through the canonical JH receptor components, Methoprene-tolerant and Taiman. In contrast to females, long photoperiod induced reproduction even in males with silenced JH reception or in males with removed corpus allatum (CA), the JH-producing gland. JHSB3 was detected in the accessory glands (MAG) of reproductive males, unexpectedly, even in males without CA. If there is a source of JHSB3 outside CA or a long-term storage of JHSB3 in MAGs remains to be elucidated. These sex-related idiosyncrasies are further manifested in different dynamics of diapause termination in P. apterus by low temperature. We would like to propose that this sexual dimorphism of diapause regulation might be explained by the different reproductive costs for each sex.
